China tops Europe’s RAPEX dangerous consumer products list
The Annual RAPEX report of EU has recently been presented. According to this report Chinese products topped the index of most dangerous consumer products. Not to forget this is not the first time that the Chinese consumer products have topped the index. Chinese consumer products have remained on top of this list previously and this time with greater percentage.
RAPEX is Europe’s Rapid Alert System for dangerous consumer products excluding food items, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. RAPEX was established to ensure health and safety of consumers taking in consideration the imports by producers and the distributors. Whenever a product is found dangerous for the consumers the RAPEX takes action against it. It then informs the member States to recall the product or eliminate the dangers.
According to RAPEX the most dangerous and harmful Chinese product for 2009 were Children toys and that is really horrifying. Apart from that clothing, textile, motor vehicles and electronics remained at the top of the list for China. The biggest problems which came in notice were from dangerous chemicals, injuries, choking, electric shocks and strangulation. In 2008 the percentage of dangerous Chinese consumer products was 59 percent and by the end of 2009 it has rose to 66 percent. According to EU Commissioner of Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli if the trend continues with the same pace then by the end of 2010 the percentage could rise to 70 percent.
RAPEX developed a special system for China RAPEX-China after 1993 when the percentage of dangerous consumer products of China was almost 60 percent. Through this system the RAPEX has been continuously informing the Chinese authorities to make the products safer for the consumers but no significant steps have been taken.
The reason why the Chinese consumer products are dangerous is because they want to penetrate the EU market with low prices without taking in consideration the quality and safety measures. John Dalli further said that “we can’t order the closure of factories in China. We are going to continue to explain that we want them to intensify their vigilance.” Therefore RAPEX has now decided to visit China for the purpose of creating awareness about consumer products safety among the manufacturers and the exporters. In my view China should stop producing harmful and dangerous products and fulfill its social responsibility. What do you think?
